Meghan Markle, Jussie Smollett, and the Biracial Dilemna

Meghan Markle is biracial, and has proudly made her dual heritage part of her identity. Every follower of the Meghan drama has heard the story of how her (now discarded) father once purchased two Barbie doll families and selected the Black mom and White dad dolls to match Meghan's own family. (Not sure what happened to the White mom and Black dad dolls - maybe passed on to Zendaya a few years later?)

Meg also wrote an essay for Elle about her mixed-race heritage headlined "I'm More Than An Other".

More and more kids today are mixed-race, and it could even be argued that mixed-race is becoming the contemporary standard of beauty. (At the very least, the housewives populating TV commercials in the US all seem to be a mix of Asian, Hispanic, and Black. No more blonde ladies hugging the toilet paper or pouring the kids' Kool-Aid).

But growing up mixed-race is not without challenges. You're never 100% one or the other. Many mixed-race people deal with rejection or fear of rejection from one group or the other, or feel they need to "pick a side."

Which leads to Jussie Smollett.

The hate crime hoax

If you don't follow the US news closely, you may not have heard the story of Jussie Smollett, a biracial man with a Black mother and a Polish Jewish father. Smollett, an acclaimed musician and one of the stars of the Fox series Empire, told Chicago police in late January he had been the victim of a racist and homophobic hate crime.

Smollett's description of the crime - that he was attacked at 2am on a sub-freezing Chicago night by two hulking Trump supporters who carried a noose and bleach and recognized him from TV - was always a little suspect, and it now appears that he paid two Nigerian brothers to rehearse and stage the attack.

Jussie primarily identified with his Black heritage: he starred on a mostly-Black TV show with a largely Black audience, played R&B music to a largely Black fan base, and allied himself with Black politicians like Al Sharpton and Corey Booker (plus the biracial Kamala Harris.)

He was also virulently opposed to Donald Trump. If an explanation ever comes out for his thoroughly stupid hate crime hoax, it will probably be that he wanted to "start a conversation about racism under Trump."

The other hoax?

While Jussie Smollett favored his black identity and tried to emphasize his ties to the Black experience, the Duchess of Sussex lives (and seems to have always lived) in a White world. Most of her friends and her past long-term partners are White, she pledged a White sorority at university, and even identified herself as White on at least one cv.

But as an eager striver, Meghan is also willing to use her Black heritage to get her where she wants to go, and often has her team describe any opposition to her position or behavior as racially motivated. (Think it was a tacky move to announce her pregnancy at someone else's wedding? You're a racist!)

At the moment, Meghan is publicly assumed to be 7-8 months pregnant with Prince Harry's child. Many people believe she is not really pregnant. I've always been agnostic about the question, since I don't think it is my place to speculate about the contents of someone else's uterus.

That said, Meghan has certainly encouraged the speculation by her obvious and intermittent padding: on the Australian tour, when she would have been about 12 weeks pregnant, she wore an enormous 6-month belly with some outfits and nothing at all with others. By December, when she would have been about 18 weeks, she wore an 8-month belly to the British Fashion Awards.

She continues to wear towering heels at 7-8 months and bend down to pet dogs or children without obvious discomfort, other behaviors that look strange to women who have actually carried a child.

Is Meghan's pregnancy a hoax? I don't know, although she has certainly carried off hoaxes before, such as her nonexistent trips to Norway with Harry and Italy with the Clooneys.

Even before Harry, Meg always seems to have spent a large percentage of her income on PR, which is why she has so little accumulated wealth such as real estate. And PR people are professionals when it comes to hoaxing.

Desperate for fame

Both Meghan and Jussie seem desperate for fame, perhaps because they confuse attention with admiration and acceptance.

Jussie's hate crime hoax was a bid to solidify his ties to the Black community, boost his profile as an activist against Donald Trump, and perhaps support the presidential campaigns of his friends Harris and Booker, who were supporters of an anti-lynching bill that passed the Senate in December. (The bill is currently stalled in the House of Representatives. The last US death officially attributed to lynching took place in 1981.)

Meghan's hoaxes - her many small lies and, perhaps, one Big Lie - have been designed to solidify her ties to the White Royal Family. After all, if she has a kid with them, she must be a part of them, right?

Both actions were ways to call attention to themselves as authentic representatives of one of their two racial identities.

Jussie wasn't smart enough to carry off his "Big Lie." Is Meghan?

Do you think Harry is in on the extreme 'reality show' Meg is putting on? It's so over the top--definitely the opposite of what the BRF is about. It's actually bizarre!

I think Harry is lost and weak, and enjoys giving the middle finger to his big brother, his granny, and everyone else who thought of him as second-best. All of a sudden he and his greedy, foolish wife are the center of attention, not an afterthought.

That said, his behavior in Australia after the pregnancy announcement was not the behavior of an excited future father. He looked horrified. I’m sure the silicon bumps Meg was wearing on that tour were not his idea; perhaps he tried to talk her out of it, and her constant grabbing of his arm (among other things) was an attempt to soothe him and get him onside.

If Meg leaves, what does Harry have left? His military career is mostly over, and he hasn’t really found much else to occupy his time. Another wife? Meg will be a tough act to follow. A wasted, sybaritic life like Margaret or Andrew? Hope not.

I think you're spot on about him basking in new-found power & attention & sticking it to those in authority in his family. I just hope he's prepared for the utter depths he's going to be heading a la Wallis Simpson. I think H & M are going to most resemble that couple in their old age--a pathetic prospect. I really enjoy your blog!

Great blog article, as usual. It's interesting that Meghan pretty much sides with the white side (as it can get her all the things she wants quickly: money, fame, attention, etc.) and only identifies and appeals to her black heritage when it suits her or when she can wield it as a weapon against her critics. Her narcissism is unappealing, to say the least, but it's shocking to me how so much of what she does is glided over in the general press. Very few articles really take a strong, focused look at what she is doing and much less why she is doing it. They pretend it's not happening. The media is so busy fawning that it keeps it's head in the sand, hence why celebrities, the rich and powerful are allowed to get away with so much. I long for her to be exposed. I await the schadenfreude. Not because I'm an asshole, but because I often struggle in a world where I consistently see assholes win. It bugs me that she is truly and awful person and she keeps getting away with it.

Thank you! It will be interesting to see if Harry and Meghan make it to old age together. Harry's still supported by his family, while David was pretty much an outcast. David's connections to the Nazis (as detailed in the Marburg Files) didn't help.

Great point about how favoring her White side is more likely to get Meghan everything she craves. (I suppose emphasizing his Black heritage also helped Jussie in the music business.)

I agree that Meghan is getting the kid-gloves treatment in the US media; nobody wants to be the publication criticizing the Black American princess. The role of PR is also a factor; Meg is reportedly a client of Sunshine Sachs, which has powerful connections in the media world, and she also seems to be willing to pay outright for flattering coverage, like the recent ridiculous People cover story quoting five anonymous "best friends."

That said, I see a fair amount of self-examination in the media after the Smollett case, in which all the major outlets rushed to support Jussie even though his story had obvious red flags. The exposure of Jussie's big fraud makes the exposure of Meghan's big fraud more possible, and more likely. We'll see.

I can't help but think that gender and class also play a role in these two incidences. I think that, for many, Meghan has somehow fulfilled a Disney fantasy, a Cinderella made good. If she were a male, I think her behavior would be looked upon a bit harsher. But the fact that she is this biracial woman who has entered the privileged enclave of the royal family, she is protected. She knows she can get away with a lot because it's the royal family's MO to close ranks and protect each other from the masses when needed. It's collectivist in its instincts. Fergie was thrown out only when pictures of adultery surfaced. That says to me that a woman who marries into the royal family can pretty much get away with anything, so long as she doesn't cuckold one of the men. She's also reached the pinnacle of white privilege, as it doesn't get much higher than the British royal family. That is the crowd that she panders to, as Charles is footing most of the bills. Jussie, on the other hand, an openly gay biracial male was appealing for closer ties to minority groups to prove his status and connection within that culture. It's not the same thing. The innate power structure within society is not there for black/gay people (or should I say that it is different), as it is for British royalty, who come with a fairy dust sprinkled mythology all their own. He initially had support when it seemed like the story was true, but his duplicity only services to shame and undermine the struggle to be black in the now openly racist, bigoted culture of Trump's America. He can't generate a following like Meghan can because it doesn't buy into the fairy tale of little boys and girls. It's more of a nightmare, and sadly, one that he may have created. I dont' know what is worse, to believe him and know that this kind of abuse is running unchecked in the US, or to know he lied and made the next victim of racial or LGBTQ abyse seem less authentic.

There are different kinds of power. Jussie has (or had) media power; he was able to get the story of his attack on every major media outlet and receive support from several prominent politicians, including Trump himself.

(And as someone who spends a lot of time in the US interacting with people of diverse backgrounds and social classes, I find the idea of an "now openly racist, bigoted culture of Trump's America" basically useful nonsense for self-flagellating, self-aggrandizing White people. John McWhorter, a Columbia University professor who is Black, published an excellent article about this in The Atlantic yesterday.)

Meghan and the Royal Family as a whole have very limited media power; she is by definition restricted in what she can say, although she is pushing those boundaries to the extent that she can.

Her "princess" following is as an image, not as a person. I'm sure more little girls dream of growing up to be Simone Biles or Ariana Grande than growing up to be Meghan.

I'm sorry my comment offended you. That was not my intention. Feel free to delete it. As I don't know what areas you go to when you come to the US (i.e. big cities, populous states, east coast, west coast, etc.) All I can say that, at this present time, I live in a rural area in a very red, very gun happy state, where almost everyone carries a concealed weapon as it is legal. I work in community mental health. Let that combo sink in. There was a time when people with a "Serious Mental Illness" designation were not allowed to own guns, but this state felt that such a ruling was prohibiting people from their Second Amendment Rights, so they changed it. There has been a very definite change in the attitude of population I work with since Trump came into power. They have told me that "they" no longer feel oppressed as they did with our previous president and that they are more than happy with the current president and current climate of hostility towards anyone brown south of the border. There aren't a lot of African Americans here, but the ones I have met don't speak highly of the people in the tri-city area these days. Don't even get me started on the fears within the small gay and particularly trans population we have here, many of whom live in secret for fear of reprisals. I have at least two clients who are fearful for their lives for being trans within this community, but they can't afford to leave. Is their perception of this accurate? I like to think not, but the point is, is that they don't feel safe here and wouldn't in many areas of the US since Trump came into office. If I (or they) were living back in California, the situation would be vastly different. The United States is huge by comparison to most countries. We are a great country, we are a troubled country. One region, one state, one city, one article in "The Atlantic" doesn't reflect the entire nation.

Jussie Smollett and Prince William share a birth date, June 21, 1982. It was the first thing I noticed on his arrest record.
My cousins are half-black and were raised by our white grandmother, but they became black when it benefited them. They married black spouses and basically just ignored their white relatives. They joined black fraternities and sororities.; the type of frats and sororities that are huge on getting professional ahead after graduation., not the ones depicted in Animal House. They did not identify as black until they were applying for colleges, and the system worked for them. These were the days of affirmative action and before California passed 209, which the UCs are still trying to get around. My cousins went to private schools and well-educated, but they felt they were entitled to social systems that were meant for the underprivileged.
Barak Obama reminds me a lot of my cousins. I get it that people see a black man when they look at Obama, but he is actually the first bi-racial president of the United States.

I came by to see if you were going to do a post about these weird baby showers Sparkles is having. How do the British tax payers feel about this jaunt to New York? Who is paying for her security? What is she going to do with the presents? Will the Firm let her keep them?

Hi Henriette! I have no deep thoughts about the baby shower, except that if Meg is not in fact pregnant and knows she will be found out soon, she might have figured that she'd go out with a bang. Interesting that her Mom wasn't included.

Maybe Doria isn't having this. Interestingly, amid all this talk that the racist press and racist British public hate Meg for her skin color, I've heard mostly positive things said about Doria, in particularly her dignity and grace.

While I am not British, I visit Britain regularly, and in general I don't think the UK public was ever particularly in love with Meghan. I was there just before the Royal Wedding and I saw very little publicity for it. People like (or liked) Harry, and wanted to him to be happy, so they gave Meg the benefit of the doubt. Not sure how many are doing that any more.

FWIW, YouGov, the most commonly cited set of polls about the Royal Family, recently changed its polling method, supposedly to make Charles and Camilla look more popular. So it will be difficult to measure how well Meg is liked via historical measures.

Interesting points. At any rate, the US is no longer a black and white country it (largely) was in the 1960s when affirmative action rules were first put into place; many people who are biracial in 2019 are Asian-Black, Asian-White, Mestizo-White, Asian-Mestizo, Mestizo-Black, or other ethnic blends. Hopefully affirmative action rules going forward will focus on class and family income instead of skin color so everyone gets a fair chance.

Yes, although it's received surprisingly little coverage. Seems to me like a cross-promotion - like they have some of the same people working for them behind the scenes. Not sure what's in it for Beyoncé, however. I'm sure there's something. People at her level trade favors; they don't give endorsements away for free.

@Henriette As a British tax payer I can inform you that most people are not impressed by the baby shower. If you moralise about things like poverty and hardship and then go off and do this then it irks everyone and we are no exception! However I do believe that it was privately funded by her 'friends' therefore it is just a bad smell sort of thing rather than actual anger at using tax payer's money. The Royal finances are quite hard to pin down anyway as Charles has his own fortune due to his Duchy farming company, and while 'we' technically own all the Queen's assets it isn't really the case, and I think I'm right in saying that full accounts are never truly disclosed to the public.

Hey Nutty - big fan of your blog. Have you already made a post around some of the behaviors Mischi was referencing on CDAN around Meghan's unconscionable outbursts such as staff abuse and otherwise?

I suppose it's not my fault I assume her character to be like that of Rachel, the nice girl she played on Suits. I am so confused to hear of all these bullshit maneuverings because WHO DOES THAT and whyyyyyyy???? I understand not wanting to wear hose (I'd wear the goddamn hose) - it's the repeated violations of royal protocol I'm curious to hear more about and WHY would she do such a thing??

How could Harry be so besotted with someone who throws violently angry tantrums leading to the departure of staff??? I am so confused and would love more info on these behaviors and their motivations.

A Quiet Interlude

Not much appears to be going on. Living Legends came and went without fanfare ... what's the next event?   Super Bowl - Sunday February 11th?  Oscar's - March 10th?   In the mean time, some things are still rolling along in various starts and stops like Samantha's law suit. Or tax season is about to begin in the US.  The IRS just never goes away.  Nor do bills (utility, cable, mortgage, food, cars, security, landscape people, cleaning people, koi person and so on).  There's always another one.  Elsewhere others just continue to glide forward without a real hint of being disrupted by some news out of California.   That would be the new King and Queen or the Prince/Princess of Wales.   Yes there are health risks which seemed to come out of nowhere.  But.  The difference is that these people are calmly living their lives with minimal drama.

As Time Passes and We Get Older

I started thinking about how time passes when reading some of the articles about the birthday.  It was interesting to think about it from the different points of view.  Besides, it kind of fits as a follow up the last post (the whole saga of can the two brothers reunite). So there is the requisite article about how he will be getting all kinds of money willed to him from his great-grandmother.  There were stories about Princess Anne as trustee (and not allowing earliest access to it all).  Whether or not any or all of this is true (there was money for him and/or other kids) has been debated with claims she actually died owing money with the Queen paying the debts to avoid scandal.  Don't know but I seem to remember that royal estates are shrouded from the public so we may not (ever) know. However, strange things like assisting in a book after repeated denials have popped up in legal papers so nothing is ever really predicable.   We are also seein...

The Opening Act of New Adventures in Retail

I keep thinking things will settle down to the lazy days of spring where the weather is gorgeous and there is a certain sense of peacefulness.  New flowers are coming out. increasing daylight so people can be outside/play and thinking gardening thoughts.  And life is quiet.  Calm. And then something happens like a comet shooting across the sky.  (Out of nowhere it arrives and then leaves almost as quickly.)   An update to a law suit.  Video of the website is released (but doesn't actually promote any specific product which can be purchased from the website).  A delay and then jam is given out (but to whom and possible more importantly - who did not make the list?).  Trophies almost fall (oops).  Information slips out like when the official date of beginning USA residency.  (now, isn't that interesting?) With them, it's always something in play or simmering just below the surface.  The diversity of the endeavors is really ...
