Australia - Rinse and Repeat or Make a Doorstop of the Results

I've been thinking long and hard about the upcoming trip Down Under.  I don't think it will likely go as planned.

Last time it was all about how they out did everyone - even his father and mother in that place.  The numbers were off the charts (not really - compare to the Pope and so on).  This is where the idea that they could outshine the Family and so the Family was in fear of their power, awe and draw seems to have originated.

Back then, they were the new, shiny and she's pregnant.  Now, things have changed.  Life has moved on.

They would no longer be there on a British Royal Tour.  William and Catherine, would be.  Big difference.

I think a couple things.

One is that the numbers of people out to look/greet them will be much lower all the way around for the Duo.  Not official so less flashy, probably not likely to do as well as last time when they were unknown AND not as great as for William and Catherine (no matter if they precede or follow William and Catherine).  Just my guess.  This could be embarrassing on just a numbers comparison basis (historical and inter-sibling) for those who really view/ed the numbers as a/the key to how successful a trip was.

Also, the world (however) didn't stop turning seven years ago.

There were a number of less than kind stories which dogged the Duo from the beginning.  The wedding for starters.

In Australia, there was the story about tea thrown.  Also, questions about why a visit was cancelled and tears from an assistant.  And that quote about not being paid.  Maybe true, maybe not.  Not confirmed of course but just kind of odd things to leak.  Truth and planted false stories are not always obvious so sometimes waiting for more data to help discern likelihood of veracity.

Frogmore Cottage.  The crazy story and photos of the birth but not the traditional on the steps (phrasing on why comes off as unkind at best towards the people of the united kingdom).

Contrast the trip to Australia versus the one to Africa.  In Africa, yes there was the baby but ... there was something about a fire, the visit to a memorial, making women sit on the floor.  But what people really remember is the whole bit about thanking for asking.  More data and less focus on numbers.

Then there was the whole leaving their working as a British Royal and what the Queen has to say.  Let's not forget all that was said and found to not be valid in the big interview.

A real biggie was when the Queen passed.

The books.  Spotify.  They and the various Netflix shows allowed people to read, listen, watch how the Duo really are.  Now more people have more access to see them close up and personal - in ways the Duo wanted to be presented.  This is key - the critics weren't the ones editing any of that film.   And now people can draw their own conclusions about how they feel about them - unfiltered by negative (or positive) articles.

Well, it will be interesting to see what this trip will be all about when it happens.  And how it is received there.  And back in the UK.

They just need an iota of encouragement to think they are the centre of the known universe. Their narcissism knows no bounds.
There is one thing the people of Australia are not and that is idiots. The sussex duo are going to hear some boos.

That is going to be OK because the duo's trip is a revenge "state visit" for they were not invited to represent the UK in the festivites of the USA indepence of 250 years. Morons, that is what they are Harry and his wife.

I hope they spoil the King's voyage over and not the Wales's because none of this is William's fault.

I only check in every fortnight or so as they have become so boring and nothing much is happening compared to the real word.i know I am late but I just had to say how sorry I am WBBM about your loss. I appreciate everyone’s thoughts here as they are so measured but you offer not only intelligent opinion but the history to match it. My thoughts are with you in what must be such a hard time.

*&H's visit is supposed to be 'as private citizens', therefore there should be no titles used and no fanfare. Just a mention in the press should suffice but we know it won't. They will take part 'in a number of private, business, and philanthropic engagements'. So private, we'll be treated to endless photo opportunities, with * displaying her dubious sense of style, complete with creased, ill fitting clothes and, of course, endless word salads. I admit I could be wrong but... * 'is rumoured to have lined up an appearance on the Her Best Life podcast' and 'due to appear as a special guest at an upcoming Besties', so I don't think we'll avoid hearing about the duo. I don't think, however, that the welcome will be as warm as it was first time round.

Just to remind everybody, in case some of you had forgotten, this is what Harry said about their first trip to Australia:

“It was the first time the family got to see how incredible she was at the job,” he told Oprah Winfrey in 2021.

Asked if members of the Royal family were jealous, the Duke replied: “To see how effortless it was for Meghan to come into the family…. to just be able to connect with people…”

He described his wife as “one of the greatest assets to the Commonwealth that the family could have ever wished for”.

Members of the RF jealous? Yes, I 'm sure Catherine was and the Queen felt threatened. As for 'incredible at the job' and 'effortless', yes, it was hard to believe how bad she was - hot tea, anyone? Banana bread? - and it was such an effort when you're not even paid for it. I don't think the Australians will be taken in this time.

The insinuation that Catherine was `jealous' sounds like classic narcissistic projection Because that's the only way they could react, were the situation the other way around, they assume that Catherine would react that way too.
abbyh said…
I keep looking at that avert for the week end retreat and thinking about how little you really get for all that extra money for the VIP (let alone the not VIP) experience.

The room sharing - even at that price it is still you have a roommate. Looking at the ocean is great but it's like taking a cruise - how much time do you plan to spend in the cabin other than sleeping? (except if you feel sick, then you may want small, cozy and not endless day light, just saying)

The table seats; you are in the first two rows closest to the table where she will be eating. Not with her having personal convo at her table.

You are part of a whole group photo with her. Not only with her for a selfie for your Insta.

Unclear: what the weekend inclusions are.

Unclear: does the goodie bag include product like fruit spread or flowers or chocolate which may need food clearance to enter the country?

side note: I've been wondering for some time, with all the push to read on line, why push a leather book mark? The real readers I know want thin, thin, think like a sheet of paper thin to avoid cracking the spine.

So, is Nutmeg just intruding on an event that had already been setup? It seems these podcasters had the " girl's weekend" planned prior to this, or am I misreading it? It feels like she didn't want to put the time and cash into arranging something like this on her own, but instead lets others do the hard part and she just turns up. Very much her standard operating procedure! And 1700 dollars seems waaaay below what I would think madam would consider worthy recompense for being in her presence for an entire weekend. I have paid that for weekend craft retreats. I would've expected her to charge 10 times that, if not 100 times. Has she started to realize she is not the huge draw she assumed she was?!

I wonder what happens when the baroness grasps the cold fact that people are not going to be interested in her aging face and ridiculous tricks but in her (?) daughter Lili for she is a member of the Royal Family just like her father is.

There is nothing interesting in old talentless, boring women but young growing girls are quite a different thing.

Maneki Neko said…
I can't imagine anyone is interested in Lili, or Archie for that matter. That ship has sailed. We *might* have been interested in the children if they had been shown now and again from birth like Catherine and William's children. We've had numerous b&w photos of the children's backs of heads, it's now getting extremely monotonous and boring.
Well Maneki, when Lili becomes a teen aged girl and if she'll be pretty the whole world will be interested in her that is the way of the world. How much destruction her "mama" will cause her during her childhood years is an other matter. Narcissist mothers are always detrimental to their daughters and if Lili is not a biological child of our baroness she is going to hate her from the bottom of her nonexistent heart and will probably try to destroy her.

I do hope it's a wig, otherwise it'll all have to be cut off, like the coat of a bedraggled, rescued. dog.

Officials fear public outcry if Duke and Duchess of Sussex get taxpayer-funded protection

Home Office officials are trying to block the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from being given taxpayer-funded security over fears of a public backlash.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), which authorises security for senior members of the Royal family on behalf of the Home Office, is assessing whether or not to reinstate security provision for Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan.

Civil servants from the Home Office, the Cabinet Office and the Foreign Office who sit on the committee are understood to oppose granting the couple taxpayer-funded protection whenever they are in the UK because it would carry too much political risk.' ...

Was very clear that he had been told by his dad that a baseball cap was hopelessly inadequate for alpine conditions (if you're bundled up against the cold but as good as bare headed, you lose a significant amount of heat through your bonce,)
He would not be told though and father & brother were far from sympathetic as it was entirely his own fault. Despite them agreeing that he'd learn, it was abundantly clear that nothing has changed.

There was an article 2 days ago in the Telegraph - see above - so this is just rehashed. Nothing is definite yet. I don't know why they would need security when visiting as they would be picked up from the tarmac and ferried straight to a royal residence, presumably - unlike the rest of us peasants on public transport. Anne, Edward and Sophie get security only when attending official public engagements/royal duties so there is no reason Harry and the missus should get security, or else they can pay for it (but won't).

* 'has discreetly locked in 12 Australian trademarks for her lifestyle brand, As Ever, according to filings with the Australian Government's intellectual property office.

The applications — initially lodged in September 2024 and approved in June last year — cover a wide-ranging list of categories.

They include skincare, candles, gardening, clothing, event planning, jewellery and home décor.

Insiders say it would be an opportune time for Meghan to try a new business venture after her multi-million dollar partnership with Netflix came to an end.'

Unsurprisingly, the comments from Australia all say they don't want her overpriced tat.

A video on 'Mr and Mrs Grifter' and their upcoming visit to Australia. There is a bit about Harry's police protection in the UK at the start. I don't think the Australians are/will be enamoured with the duo.

Cliff Hanger

Deadlines for responses have passed.  Will they show?  Won't they show?   And, rumors of demands for money to cross hands to make appearances (new level of pay to play). Such drama.  You would think this was a soap opera where every episode ends with a crazy cliff hanger story plot to drive the next installment.  Sadly, I don't expect it to change any time soon either.  No.  For them, there appears to be way too much energy left in the will they, won't they to end it now even though everyone else is pretty much tired of it.  Hardly something one can point to and claim that they are trying to reconcile with those who feel distressed about what was printed. Just noticed something: remember that talk of trying to reach out and reconcile after the book, etc.?  It seems to have drifted away, hasn't it?  Hmm.  Interesting.  I wonder if that is recognized as a total lost cause or just delayed into the summer (or fall) campaign (c...

Here comes Trevor

If you're a Beatles fan, you'll know that in the fifty years since the group went its separate ways, almost everyone involved with them has sold his or her story. Only one major figure has not: Jane Asher , who was Paul McCartney's girlfriend for five years during the heyday of the group, and accompanied him on the famous trip to India in 1968. An actress, Jane went on to become a TV personality and famous cake-baker. She has never spoken about her time with McCartney and dislikes being asked. Until recently, the Sussex saga had included a similar figure: Trevor Engelson, Meghan Markle's ex-husband.  Trevor has never spoken about Meg. But he has done well for himself: he married a wealthy woman , continues to work as a producer , and seems to have a loyal (and multi-racial!) circle of friends , unlike some people we know.  He appeared to have excused himself from the whole soggy mess.  Until yesterday, when he was papped. Driving his black Porsch...

But Really, Could they?

Richard Eden has an interesting article in the DM which references an article in The Guardian about the necessity of the passport applications for the kids as including HRH and the last name of Sussex. Why?  Well supposedly this is all because they want to allow the kids to decide for themselves to become a working royal or continue to stay in private life. The main focus becomes how this bewilders the Palace considering how difficult the parents found it all and then left.  As well has his thoughts that this is about maintaining royal aura ("links" is his term) before ending with how a push for the daughter might be as the American Princess might be helpful to her mommy's business. What I wonder about is:  What or where did they get the idea that the kids would be welcomed into the fold and become working royal? I am not convinced that was ever an option once they stepped back. America doesn't do British history quite the same way or to the same detail.  Manne...
